Comfort Hip Protector Simply limit the risk of a hip fracturefrom € 67.50 including VAT
Each year approximately 15,000 people in the Netherlands break their hip. One of the causes is osteoporosis. The group most at risk largely consists of people of 60 years and older.
Osteoporosis is not the only cause of hip fractures: diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, dementia and joint disorders increase the risk thereof.
- Significant shock absorption, >60% fall impact reduction

- Removable protective elements

- Closed and open crotch shorts
How to prevent?
The idea is simple: if most damage to the hips is caused by a fall, the chances of prevention are highest if the shock of such a fall can be reduced.
A couple of years ago Loek Bos of Lyds International set to work on this principle for the avoidance of a lot of discomfort for the elderly and high healthcare costs.
Stichting Consument en Veiligheid and the Osteoporosis Foundation support the Hip Protector which was designed by Lyds and made of SANDS, which is based on a strong shock absorbing material used by NASA in space shuttles for the interior. Comfortable Nederland has taken over these activities of Lyds International.
Smart and light material
SANDS is a thin and very elastic material that has an improved fit, providing a smart and skin-friendly adjustment to the contours of the human body. Laboratory tests have shown that the material absorbs no less than 60% of the shock caused by a fall. The Comfort Hip Protector incorporates the shock absorbing material in the critical areas in the hip areas of the elastic, cotton underwear.
The high shock absorption of the Comfort Hip Protector considerably reduces the risk of hip fractures. Tests in home care have even showed that those wearing them gain more self confidence in their freedom of movement. Pants with an open crotch are also available for people with incontinence problems. Stichting Consument en Veiligheid is happy with the invention.
Extremely comfortable to wear
The cotton underwear is thin and elastic and the soft, flexible protection elements are not even a centimetre thick and are extremely comfortable to wear. The soft comfortable elements can even in the evening and at night, the times in the day during which bone fractures occur, without any problem!
Most elderly over the age of 55 consider fall prevention an annoying subject. However, it is a serious problem, one that deserves the necessary attention. On average1,700 people of 55 years and older die after having falling.
On average 88,000 of 55 years and older end up at accident and emergency department of a hospital after having fallen, this amounts to 240 victims a day! The injuries of 31,000 of the elderly over 55 years old are so serious that they need further hospital treatment. In 15,000 of those cases, this involves a hip fracture! In addition to the seriousness of the accidents and the high medical costs, the accident involving a fall also affect the independence experienced by elderly over the age of 55. They feel less independent and are afraid to fall again. This often leads to great uncertainty and sometimes a new fall. Hip protection can increase self-confidence and help the elderly to remain mobile and independent.
Scientific research shows that hip protectors considerably reduce the chances of hip fractures and other consequences of falling sideways. In the case of the Comfort Hip Protector no less than 60% of the energy released during a fall is absorbed. However, a hip protector can never fully exclude the risk of a bone fracture.
A repetitive problem that has been established by the research is that hip protectors are often incorrectly worn. The reasons provided for this are: lack of comfort, visible underneath clothes, skin irritation due to the pressure of the protective elements, tight waistbands and “brewing” under synthetic parts. The putting on and taking off of the system is sometimes considered difficult. A preventive aid naturally only offers protection if it is actually used. That is why we have paid special attention to the user friendliness, visibility and comfort. The Comfort Hip Protector is so comfortable that you can wear it day and night.
We advise elderly who have objections against continuously wearing a hip protector, or consider it bothersome, to wear a hip protector when there is an increased chance of falling, for example during slippery conditions/sleet or when you are engaging in sports.
“ If hip protectors would be distributed in care or nursing homes and the elderly would actively be encouraged to wear them, the number of hip fractures would go down by 40%. This is the conclusion of a scientist of Hamburg University. ”
“ They also offer underpants with protective padding at the hips: it can prevent a lot of suffering. ”
“ The pants have soft padding on both sides in order to break the fall. Research in other countries has shown that that the hip ”
The Comfort Hip Protector is currently available in three colours: black, white and tan color.

Remove the protection elements from the underwear and wash the pants at a temperature of 60ºC or 90ºC. The underwear is made of 95% cotton and 5% elastane. The underwear will shrink by no more than 8% the first time it is washed. The underpants can be washed with the protection elements at a temperature of no more than 60ºC. However, we do recommend separately washing the protection elements by hand at a temperature of 40ºC. The protection elements become soft when they are warm and can break due to the weight of the remaining wash in the machine. The protective elements should therefore never be dried in the wash dryer and cannot come in contact with chloride.
